Philly Cheesesteaks in Korea
By Ben Gwynne, 2010-01-16
This quiet and unassuming shop nestled in Hongdae, boasts one of the better Philly Cheesesteaks this American has ever tasted. The recently opened Queen’s Bite is a must visit for anyone who has ever had the pleasure of enjoying this iconic sandwich. Though the menu is small, the quality of food, service and décor of the restaurant is top notch.
Inspired by living in the city of Philadelphia for a short period, the owner of Queen’s Bite wanted to put a Korean twist on the cheesesteak and introduce it in an area of Seoul which embraces the unique. The outcome was a toasted bun, topped with marinated steak, fresh vegetables and two types of cheese which results in a mouth watering sandwich which is filling, cheap (4,500 won) and great for a quick bite before bouncing around the clubs of Hongdae.
With Philadelphia Phillies Major League Baseball jerseys and banners covering the walls and the staff fitted in baseball gear as well, the décor makes customers feel like they’re walking to their seats before the first pitch. Queen’s Bite offers a tasteful reminder of this American delicacy to those who are familiar with it and an introduction to those who have never had the pleasure…yet.
When properly done, the cheesesteak provides an experience more than just a meal, and Queen’s Bite has passed the test by all marks.
Queen’s Bite is located in Hongdae, a short walk from the Hongik University Station on the Green Line (#2). The phone number is (02)333-5069.

Buldak
By Rob McGovern,
Buldak, literally ‘fire chicken’, is a violently spicy dish and is used in much the same way as other chilli drenched dishes around the world, to temporarily remove any doubts you might be having over how important you are.
